Haridwar means 'The gateway to the Gods'. Haridwar is the gateway to the other three pilgrimages of Uttaranchal namely Kedarnath, Badrinath and Rishkesh. Mentioned to as Mokhsadwar, Gangadwar and Mayapuri in the ancient Hindu epics and scriptures.
Haridwar is situated on the foot hills of Shivaliks and on the banks of the holy River Ganga and this place the river spreads to the northern pains. It is also initial point on the journey to the holy sources of the Yamuna and the Ganga rivers. Haridwar is situated at a height of about 300 meters.
Haridwar has been sanctified by the presence of three gods; Mahesh, Vishnu and Brahma. Haridwar is amongst the seven sanctified of India cities. It is also one of the major Shaktipeeths. Haridwar is one of the 7 cities sacred of the Hindus.
The Kumbha Mela coming once every 12 years and the Ardha Kumbha Mela happening once every 6 years is big draw. Haridwar is also called as sapta-puri or moksapuri. Religious Places of Haridwar
Har Ki Pauri
Har ki pauri ghat is located in Haridwar. Haridwar is one of the most sanctified ghats in India. This ghat was constructed by Vikramaditya in remembrance of his brother Bhartrihari. On this ghat is performed in the evening a Maha Aarti. It is an occasion is not missed by any visitor. Har ki pauri ghat is also called as Brahmakund.
Chandi devi temple is located on the top of the hill. This is known as the Neel Parvat. Neel parvat is situated on the other side of the Ganga River. In 1929 A.D., Suchat Singh the king of Kashmir was built by Chandi Devi temple. This temple is a 3 km travel as of Chandi Ghat. Chandi devi temple is 6 km from the major city of Haridwar.
Mansa Devi temple is situated on top of the hill. This hill is called as Bilwa Parvat. On the top of a hill provides you an outstanding view of Haridwar. Mansa Devi can be attained by the rope way the normal trekking road to the top.
At one locate Ganga separates herself in seven small flows. This place is called as the Sapt Rishi. Sapt Rishi gives a very nice sight.
Ten days before Shivteras in the Hindu months of Shravan and Phalgun, similar to the months of July and August. Number of devotees crowd Haridwar and all the way walking bare feet to collect of the sacred waters of the Ganga River.
It is one of the main Shaktipeeths in India. Maya devi temple is the ancient temple and is also the Adhisthatri deity of Haridwar. People are said that when Lord Shiva was carrying his wife sati, who had burnt herself to keep the honor of her husband, then the navel and heart of Sati had fallen at this place.
Daksha Mahadev Temple
Daksha Mahadev temple is 4 km from Haridwar. Haridwar is a city called Kankhal. Legend says that this place of the king Daksha Prajapati execute a yagya. King Daksha father of sati, Sati was married to Mahadev. But king Daksha was not happy this marriage and did not invited shiva-sati in the yagya.
But Sati came the father house and was insulted by father. This reason Sati was burnt herself in the yagya kund. On hearing this follower of Mahadev killed Daksha. But later Lord shiva brought king Daksha to life. This legend is an attribute to the Daksha temple. Daksha Mahadev temple is one of the 5 holy places in Haridwar.

- Air: In this area Air services are available only upto Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun.
- Rail: The railways have a station at Haridwar. This main pilgrimage center has been connected by rails main city of India.
- Road: The National Highway is connected to other cities of the state and other towns in India. This place buses obtainable form Delhi. They have also available for private buses. The state transport has regular with deluxe and semi-deluxe buses on this way for long distance travel.
